#6022 Update status

Posted by ari on 07 February 2014 - 10:16 AM

As you guys know, i've been having trouble working consistently on the 2.0 update or it would be finished and released a while ago.  As it stands now the update is more than 80% complete, and I fully intend on eventually finishing it.  To remedy my lack of motivation and continue Eden dev, me and Steve talked about him coming on full time and potentially adding another programmer to the team.  I won't go into details, but suffice to say, that plan fell through pretty disastrously(completely my fault, Steve was on board). So now it's pretty clear that I won't be doing any more hiring, so it's on me to finish this thing.  I'm still open to the idea of transferring Eden development to another studio/developer if it was a good fit, but I'm not actively searching for one.

Truth be told, right now i'm working on a small game that isn't Eden related.  The plan is to finish it and then return to Eden work, or work on both simultaneously, or something(actually the plan is to start being productive again, and working on a "fun" side project seemed like a way to do that).   In any case don't hold your breath waiting for the update, I don't exactly have a good track record of delivering them in a timely manner.  I still care about the game though and i'm quite resolved that I will continue it's development(at a turtles pace, if necessary) for another update or two until it feels complete.   After which, if it's still profitable/has users , I'll search in earnest for another studio to take over development.

#11753 Encouragement

Posted by ▒AJ▒ on 12 May 2014 - 04:39 PM

So it's the year 3274.  Medical science has rendered humans nearly immortal.  Upon failing, body parts are switched out and replaced with mass produced substitutes.  With enough money, one can afford to live forever.  The population of humans is now in the trillions.  Earth has long since been abandoned.

You're sitting in a living compartment on a terraformed planet orbiting Vega... playing Eden.  Your device is capable of simulating a humans entire life of brain function in a quarter of a second, but you're using this nearly magical device to run an iOS 16.2.1 emulator.  You have spent centuries creating worlds that would make Olympic Metropolis" look like "bigest evr hous in eden".  Worlds that would take days to walk from one end to the other.  All of this within the 63 block height limit.

One day, for the first time in over 12 centuries you finally see

#18130 New Analysis Video Of The 2.0 Beta

Posted by admin on 06 January 2015 - 07:05 AM

you can clearly see that at minute one point four five in the video ari touches the ipad multiple times in rapid succesion thus indicating that ari has super human finger speed and dexterity. i don't know how i feel about that. is ari a mutant? can we trust him?

also if you scroll to minute two point one two you can see the green creature in some kind of bathing ritual, does the frequency of the bobbing have some connection to the update release date? does eden promote satanism? i don't know how i feel about that

just kidding.. good catches.. i forget that the videos i post are going to get dissected sometimes lol.   some of the new art is stuff that steve's still polishing.   i thought the sky change thing would be easy to accidentally do too with one touch, but it seems not to be an issue, we'll see what people say in the beta... easy to fix.  yea mini/half blocks had to be cut. double blocks were awkward and pointless, they didn't really help you build faster.  yea a couple things that either weren't that fun or had technical issues... had to be cut to get the update out.. i tried to do too much with the update and got stuck when it wasn't all working out. but most of what was "advertised" on facebook is still there.

#17414 Search problems?

Posted by ari on 14 October 2014 - 09:10 AM

search disabled until update because the availability of inappropriate content violated app store rules. update will include flagging feature to mark maps for removal, so that community world sharing can be restored.  more motivated than ever to ship, iphone 5 screen resolution, community sharing issues both very annoying.  Not to mention the new content really brings the game together imo and should of been shipped months/years ago if I had been more focused.   long overdue.  some people have high expectations because of how long it's been, but I think those are unmerited,  if you like the game as it is now, hopefully you'll like it a bit more after the update is released.  not going to radically change anything or the core creative focus of the game, but there is a bunch of interesting fresh new building items that i think work well with what's already there, and I think fleshing out the default world and a bunch of other stuff we did really solidifies the themes of the game and makes it it's own creative work, separate from what minecraft and other's are doing.  we'll see though, obviously you guys and the market decide if it's any good.  just gonna focus on shipping and see where things stand after the dust settles.  Android port should be on the horizon after, no work has been started on that yet though.

#9598 New mod experiment

Posted by admin on 12 April 2014 - 08:50 PM

Hi guys,  because of the recent flare up of drama and people pming me. I've added the forum's first mod: "Direct City - Brice".  I chose brice because on viewing his post history, he doesn't seem to get involved in the drama threads much, so I figured he would be non-controversial and unlikely to abuse his powers and anger people.  Hopefully it will be helpful to have someone here who regularly reads the forum that can lock toxic and spam threads.

Also, no I don't have any new information on when the next Eden update will come out.  Sorry!

#9399 Rocket, stop.

Posted by ansin11 on 08 April 2014 - 12:35 PM

Guys, seriously, what exactly is your problem? I mean, do you even read what you are typing? If somebody has problems with somebody faking his identity or whatever, he has to go talk to that person and maybe tell the admins! This is supposed to be a forum for BUILDERS; if youre looking for drama or I-don't-know-what, go play some MMO's! I feel like im getting trolled in here sometimes, seriously! Just be normal and yourself, be nice to everybody or at least try to and stop hating / trolling / annoying people you don't even know! Nobody would care IF somebody has several accounts in here if that had any good reason, you wont be able to do anything against that anyways. Go, build a world, share your building process or problems, ask for advice or whatever, but PLEASE stop these pointless discussions, PLEASE!

#7055 Scary Stories

Posted by ▒AJ▒ on 28 February 2014 - 08:47 PM

This happened a little over a year ago.

I was working at McDonald's as a high school part time job. It was terrible. Don't work at McDonald's. It was a McDonald's in the middle of a few different construction zones, and a slaughterhouse. The slaughterhouse doesn't have anything to do with the story though. Our customers were pretty much only workers from the construction site.

The McDonald's was one of the 24/7 ones. I honestly have absolutely no idea why. At night, without the constructions workers, in the middle of nowhere, there was almost never any customers. As a high school student, I got a few shifts on weekends, and 3 hours a night on the weekdays from 11:00 pm to 2:00 am. When I started the job I actually liked the night shifts more than the weekend shifts. The weekend was always busy, and the night shifts were mostly just sitting around playing Eden or whatever. Eventually I just dropped the weekend shifts and just worked nights.

At night I had one of two partners working the night shift with me. It generally alternated between this small older woman and another high schooler. Every once in a while, maybe once a month, one of them would call in sick or something, and I would work alone. It wasn't really a problem for me because there were never any customers anyways, and besides, I got payed extra for working alone. The high school dude started calling in sick more and more often. I guess he was just lazy or something.

Anyways, the first incident seemed like nothing at the time. It was one of those alone days. By myself just building stuff in Eden or playing Modern Combat 3 on my iPod. At the end of my shift, it was my job to count up all the money in the till and make sure it added up to everything that was sold during my shifts. As the difference was almost always zero, this was usually a pretty quick job. On this day, however, there was an extra toonie (two dollar coin, for you Americans), and I was missing a nickel. Nobody had come that night, as per usual, so I just assumed the previous shift had made a mistake. I marked it down and went home.

About a week later, I was alone again. This time a couple people came to the McDonald's. They bought a few things and left. At the end of the shift, again I had an extra $1.95. This time I just assumed I had just accidentally short-changed the people who came. I marked it down and went home.

A few weeks later, the first incident repeated itself. I, again, just assumed it was the previous shift's fault, and marked it down and went home. I decided that from then on I would check the till at the beginning of my shift as well just to make sure.

Some time later, it happened again. Nobody came to the McDonald's, but I had an extra $1.95. This really weirded me out, because I had checked the till at the beginning of the shift, and everything had been fine. I marked it down, and went home feeling very uneasy.

After that, I was always jittery going in to work every night. I was always relieved when my shift partner didn't call in sick. One night I got the call I was dreading. The dude who was supposed to be there that night called in sick. I counted the money at the beginning of the shift, and everything was in order. I was on edge, jumping at every small sound. I decided that I would steal the security camera hard drive if something weird happened. Nobody ever checked it anyways, and I could probably return it without getting caught. I was almost not surprised at the end of the shift to find the extra $1.95. I marked it down, and hurried home.

I didn't check it that night, because I was tired. The next day I had forgotten I had it, until I had to go to work. For the second day in a row my shift partner called in sick, and I was alone again. I thought that this was the perfect opportunity to check the security tapes. I connected the hard drive to the camera monitor, and started watching the previous day's footage. I started fast forwarding, and everything was pretty much uneventful. Just me sitting on one of the chairs playing on my iPod. Then I saw something happen. The hairs stood up on the back of my neck. I almost didn't want to see what happened, but I had to. I re-winded it and watched. I saw a woman walk into the McDonald's. In the video I just stood up, took her order, and made an iced coffee for her. She took the drink and left, and I sat back down and resumed playing on my iPod. I was shaking and desperately trying to remember if that had happened and I had just forgotten it.

I decided to watch the other three incidents. They took a while to find (sorting through almost 2 months of footage), but eventually I found them. Pretty much the exact same thing happened in each of them. And it was also the same woman whom I did not recognize. I decided then and there that I would quit without the three month notice. I put the hard drive back, put all of the money in the safe, and turned out the lights and got ready to leave. I was leaving through the back of the McDonald's, when something on the monitor for the security camera moved. I almost screamed out loud. I wanted to run, but I knew I had to watch what happened. To my horror, I saw myself in the monitor walk over to the lights and turn them back on. I realized that whatever was happening on the monitor was happening right behind the door to the main part of the McDonald's, and it was happening right now. I was trying not to just break down and cry at this point and kept watching the monitor. I saw the woman come in, and buy her iced coffee, and leave. The "me" on the screen then proceeded to walk towards the door to the kitchen where I was. Then I looked down from the monitor and saw the door opening.

#19747 How to Build Past the Edge

Posted by mrob27 on 28 February 2015 - 07:31 PM

In Eden 2.0 the "normal" world has a lot of terrain of different types, and there is an invisible wall all the way around the world.

I wanted to make a track that goes all the way around, but the corners were a bit of a challenge.

Here's how to build off the edge.

Find a place you want to build.

Place water on the edge.

Build onto the side of the water.

Remove the first water, then place new water on the new blocks that you just built.

Extend the floor out as far as you want. Then build up or down off of it.

You can use this to place unreachable objects past the edge of the world, or just make a wall around the edge so it doesn't look like you're about to fall off into space.

You can also build out past the corner, it just takes a few more steps.

Saving and reloading works fine. Mine got a little laggy a few times, I tried to figure out whether the lagging was because of the water or something else, but I didn't figure anything out.

#21252 I quit eden

Posted by Atlanta Ga Skyline on 03 May 2015 - 04:09 AM

This entire topic is stupid. I mainly play eden because of the stories you create when you build a world not because I want to be on the pop list. If you quit eden you don't need to tell everyone. I play eden because it's kinda like a 3d printer because it gives you the power to create anything you can dream of, that's why Eden is so special. I don't have to store up materials or fight off zombies to create something amazing.

#18923 The Emerald Temple

Posted by RowdyPants on 17 February 2015 - 09:24 PM

Hi, my name is Josh.  I created The Emerald Temple.

I shared it a few years ago in-game and on Facebook but never in these Eden Forums.  With the recent update to the game I wanted to post some old screenshots and tell you I'll be enhancing this world with the new game features.

Here are some pictures for your viewing pleasure!

Fun Facts:

•There are seven secret locations to find and explore!

•Under each of the four crystal towers there are hidden water doors for direct entry into the lowest levels of the temple!

•Before the massive moat was poured the entire rock ground was painted to brighten the waves!

•There are four large signs reading 'facebook.com/notsri' that lead to, you guessed it, my facebook page!

•'Notsri' or 'Branch/Offshoot/Root' references the connection I felt to old Hebrew teachings.  Look it up for some insightful history!

•The vast majority of the temple structures began underground and had to be meticulously dug out!

•If you're willing to search, you'll find over twenty closed off passageways that were later redesigned!

•During construction I accidentally set fire to the colossal outer wall (made of wood).  I panicked, quit out, and reopened to find hundreds of heavily charred logs that needed replacing!

Future Plans:

The original version took me a year of building by hand to complete.  I suspect this next version will take slightly less time :P See you then!

#1833 Eden competition II

Posted by Legend Of The Deep Oak on 06 September 2013 - 03:14 AM

Eden forum

Hello everyone! Eden Competition II is going to begin very soon! Since it's October I would like for this topic to be Halloween theme based. So please comment of what ideas you have for it, wether it's a haunted mansion or a scary forest, you name it! And to be clear anyone can participate in the voting and the building, wether if your participating or not. And for the final vote again the more the better! So the competition is going to start on October 10th and end on November 10st. So get building and have ideas in mind. :) Here are the rules:

1. Building MUST be made on a flat world

2. You cannot copy someone else's idea or use there world

3. Have fun :)

#20641 Collectables

Posted by Squidish on 18 March 2015 - 05:12 PM

I see great potential in the treasure cubes. So, what if whe could place a collectable pickaxe? That way, players couldn't use it until they collect it. It could also go for flame, paint, and all types of blocks.

#16891 Breaking News

Posted by NathanielBrusch on 17 September 2014 - 07:18 PM

Guys! have you all seen this yet! the facebook page......

Mojang and Minecraft officially acquired by Microsoft today for 2.5 billion. Notch, Carl and others will be leaving the company. Even though I don't know Notch and Eden kind of, sort of, competes with Minecraft pocket edition; It's sad to see them sell. They had the potential to grow the company into a large gaming company that embodies indie values such as ethics over profits and creativity over marketability. It's understandable of course because Minecraft's success caught notch by surprise, and he had no ambitions of running a large company. But you can't help but wonder if they stuck with it and expanded what might have been. -Ari

I'm still slowly making progress on the update, my brain is like broken though and I don't make fast progress anymore. The bright side is it's basically fixing normal bugs and adding new sfx before it's ready to be beta tested and shipped. So even at my embarrassingly slow rate of progress it should ship soon. (Where soon means hopefully in a month, but almost certainly by years end). If I don't ship by years end then I suck.
